What is Western Astrology?

Astrology which is used in western countries is called western astrology. It is more famous in western countries. It is also called tropical astrology. Western astrology is assumed historically based on Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos (2nd century AD), which further was continuation of Hellenistic and apparently Babylonian tradition.

We can say that western astrology is also similar to Vedic astrology but the calculation in western astrology is done differently. Western Astrology is largely based on horoscope. The main factor in western astrology which is used in horoscope is zodiac sign while in Vedic astrology we use many factors such as planet, their motion and position, nakshatra, grahas etc.

In western astrology it is considered that the sun is the center of the constellation and it moves around earth thus it covers a full circle motion in 360 degree manner. When the sun is on vernal equinox (the first day of spring) is taken the 1 degree of Aries. This calculation of zodiac sign is known as the tropical zodiac.

So, in western astrology the birth date of a person is considered for his zodiac sign as if a person takes birth between March 20 – April 19 his zodiac sign will be Aries. This is the time period the sun be found within 30 degree position. And so we keeps adding 30 degree to find the next time period of the other zodiac sign in which a sun keeps.
